And the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay goes to...
Whelp, I got this wrong. I predicted The Favourite, as did most.
The minute this won here, I had a feeling it might take Best Picture. (That was still such a shock though.)
It's less tone deaf to reward it here; although the fact that the writers didn't consult Don Shirley's family will make this win sit unfavorably with many. (I take less issue with that, so am more ok with the win here; see my thoughts on the movie & its big win on the Best Picture page.) But The Favourite's script is far more innovative & dynamic - so it's a shame that it suffered this surprising loss.
